...snip...
I've noticed that when wearing the curved BB it tends to get dirty and smelly much faster than either the CBR or circBB. I'd say that cleaning a new piercing would be much easier with the circular. To properly clean the curved BB you would either have to take it out, which is a no-no for a new pierce, or push hard one direction and then the other which would stress the pierce a lot.
CBR's are good in the smaller (10,8,6) gauges because there are usually fewer places for gunk to build up so they are easier to keep clean. In larger guages CBR's get unwieldy since a tool is required to open them.
As to the initial sizes, the larger gauges are more comfortable, but cut more tissue putting more capillaries and nerves at risk. Smaller gauges initially and stretching up moves them out of the way rather than damaging them. The trick is to avoid the cheese-slicer effect until you can comfortably stretch to a safer, more comfortable gauge.
Take care to get the correct diameter, as well. Too small and you risk damage to the urethral opening and the pierce is more likely to migrate. Too large and the ring will twist more easily, putting strain on the pierce and causing pain.
If you go with a circular BB, the balls should be large enough not to slip into the urethra. If it's small enough to slid in, the ring will rotate until only the ball is inside, right down at the pierce. The rest of the ring will be out with lots of leverage to tear the pierce.
After healing, a curved BB can be more comfortable for daily-wear since it doesn't twist like either type of ring will.
