Well I've been lurking in the rabbit hole for several months now. After reading various posts and researching piercing on BME and several other sites, I finally decided to get my septum pierced with a circular barbell. So, I tell my dad that I am going to get my septum pierced and would like him to come with my to sign the waiver (I'm 17). He says ok and everything is all peachy (except for my grandmother who declares I will look like a moron with my septum pierced). Tonight, I finally went out to the reputable Shaper's Quest to get my septum done and low and behold they won't pierce anyone who is under 18 (even with parental approval). Apparently due to local legislation any place endorsed by the Health Department can not pierce anyone under 18. So, I am currently looking for a reputable, sterile, autoclave owning piercing shop in or anywhere around Charlotte, North Carolina that is not endorsed by the Health Department. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hey you moron...... Excuse me for being blunt but why in the world would you want to go to a studio that is not backed by the local Health Department..... ?????

Is your health not an important issue ? If I was you I would wait until you are of age......

But that is just my recommendation.....

As far as I know the local Health Department only checks for an autoclave and needle sterilization. I would assume that there would be some sterile places that opt not to be inspected because it would eliminate there under 18 piercing market. It's not like I'm going to go to some shit hole to get a needle poked through my septum.

I'm sort of a lurker here, but I just had to make a comment. The health depatment in TN checks for a hell of a lot more than just having an autoclave and sterilzing needles. The checklist covers of every part of the shop, from the lobby to the artist's rooms to the restroom facilities. Even the types of trashcans used are checked. If you are to visit a shop and don't see this list posted in an obvious place, it is my advice that you turn around and walk out pretty quickly. If you would like to email me, Cyrus. I will be glad to give you the name and address of the only tattoo/piercing shop I will visit. We are only a few hours away from Charlotte.

I understand this logic, though I think any piercing studio which wants a good reputation would seek recognition and sacrifice the under-18 market. I would say that this is sort of like drug testing - it's often viewed as an 'admission of guilt,' if you will, if you don't submit to the testing. Not seeking the recognition may seem to some as if there's something unclean which the studio is hiding. The recognition is like a (albeit rather silly) stamp of approval that says 'this place is clean.'

To not bear that stamp when you are fully qualified to do so, I would think, would cost you in business. While this certification says nothing of the quality of the piercing itself, it is something which, when properly advertised, is beneficial to a studio.

I think it is wonderful that you are seeking a real piercer and not doing some of the stupid things many minors do (gunned navels, friends with safety pins, etc.)... but I think it might be worth the wait to go to the best place out there, not just someone who might be less-than-perfect and catering to the under-18 crowd.

The studios I like the best have strict rules on minors, and I support them as well.
